Sample answers

Six questions. Six real answers.

Not "it's complicated." Not "scientists are still studying this." The actual answer — explained clearly.

Why is the sky blue?
Rayleigh scattering. The atmosphere scatters shorter wavelengths of light more than longer ones. Blue light scatters in all directions across the sky. At sunset, you're looking through more atmosphere, so only red and orange survive the longer path.
Are we alone in the universe?
Statistically, almost certainly not. The observable universe contains an estimated 2 trillion galaxies. But "almost certainly" and "we've found evidence" are very different things. This chapter explains what we're looking for and what finding it would mean.
Why do we dream?
We don't fully know — which is itself interesting. Current theories involve memory consolidation, emotional regulation, and threat simulation. Dreaming appears to be important: animals that can't dream die from it. The why is still open.
What is time?
Physicists have a mathematical description of time — it appears as a dimension in Einstein's equations. But what time actually is, why it has a direction, and whether it truly flows are unresolved questions at the frontier of physics and philosophy.
How does memory work?
Memory is not storage — it's reconstruction. Every time you remember something, you rebuild it from fragments, updating it in the process. This chapter explains why eyewitness testimony is unreliable and why your oldest memories are often wrong.
Why do we need sleep?
Sleep clears neurotoxins from the brain (including amyloid beta, linked to Alzheimer's), consolidates memories, repairs cells, and regulates hormones. Animals that don't sleep die. Humans who can't sleep deteriorate rapidly. It's not optional.

Questions about the book

Quick answers.

Both — honestly. Some questions have clear scientific answers. Others are genuinely open at the frontier of knowledge. The book is honest about the difference, and explains why open questions are as interesting as answered ones.

Adults and curious teenagers. The language is clear and accessible, but the depth is real. This is not a children's science book — it engages the actual complexity of each question.

Physics, biology, neuroscience, cosmology, chemistry, evolution, and philosophy of science. The questions range from the everyday (why do onions make you cry?) to the cosmic (what came before the Big Bang?).
