Six myths. Six corrections.

The beliefs you've heard your whole life — and what the evidence actually says.

Myth We only use 10% of our brain.
Fact False at every level. Brain scans show activity across all regions. The 10% figure has no known scientific origin. Every part of the brain has a documented function.
Myth Lightning never strikes the same place twice.
Fact Lightning specifically favors the same places — tall, pointed conductors. The Empire State Building is struck about 25 times per year. The saying is the opposite of true.
Myth The Great Wall of China is visible from space.
Fact No human has seen it with the naked eye from the International Space Station. Even Chinese astronaut Yang Liwei looked for it and couldn't see it. The wall is long but narrow.
Myth Humans have only five senses.
Fact Proprioception, thermoreception, nociception (pain), vestibular sense, and more are well-documented senses. Most neuroscientists count at least 9. The number 5 was Aristotle's estimate.
Myth Antibiotics work on viral infections.
Fact Antibiotics are ineffective against viruses. They treat bacterial infections only. Taking them for a cold or flu does nothing except contribute to antibiotic resistance.
Myth Sugar makes children hyperactive.
Fact Double-blind studies consistently show no effect of sugar on children's behavior or activity levels. The effect is entirely expectational — it's what parents believe they're seeing.
